AGAIN WITH THE METAPHORS
"BTW, Governor
Schwarzenegger is interested in my "Broadband Bong" initiative. I don't know why
I can't get you to sign my petition!? All the folks that I get to sign it out in
front of my local 7/11 keep asking me if Bill Maher is onboard yet and I have to
say that he's so far ignoring me."
The context --> I found
this gem in the comments section in response to a post by Bill Maher entitled,
"How Dare Valerie Plame Get Past Her Victimhood"
I like
that post all by itself though. Out of context it has an even greater
charm.
And speaking of responses, here at Veronika's Miscellany is a post spurred by
the mention of Jeanette Winterson in last week's newsletter EXCREMENTAL ANTI-ART SPLASHFESTO CRYPTOLOGIES
intro post.
Note: Why is this late? Yesterday the universe
was wrinkled or something. I wrecked my day working on this issue in this new
psycho template (see how the font size seems to vary? Yeah, I can't fix that
either) and had to walk away and start again this morning. Comedian Eddie
Griffin wrecked a 1.5 million dollar Ferrari while promoting a movie
and managed to walk away. It's like totally the same thing. Another wild ride on
the Metaphor-Go-Round. |

Lillianna Pereira Artist's Statement:
The language of myth allows a story to be a part of a wider universal
context. Though these stories and archetypes may resonate very closely with me
on a personal level, their creation derives from collective material and their
power lies in the meaning and the broader truth that myths convey. Culled images
from magazines, books, newspapers (printed accessible ephemera) are manipulated
and reassembled in an order to activate the archetypes that lie therein. I never
start a piece with particulars in mind, serendipity and the personal unconscious
guide the composition and the personal becomes collective/conscious once the
stories start to emerge.

'FRESH AIR' - A FUNNY PLAY ABOUT CASTRATION - (WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY EZRA LEBANK) -
PREMIERES AT A.P.E. THU-SAT, MARCH 29-31 AT 8PM!

'Fresh Air' - written and directed by Ezra
LeBank.
Starring: Harper Gernet-Girard, Katrina Ylimaki
& Ezra LeBank.
8pm. Thu-Sat, March 29-31.
The nationally acclaimed Lynx Co. presents 'Fresh Air' - a funny,
rambunctious play that rips into the humorous and challenging world of
castration (a.k.a. comtemporary American sexuality). A daring production with a
Northampton charm.
'Fresh Air' is a funny and tragic play about Peter, a
young man with a broken heart, who reads an article about
two castrations during a single week in Woodbryne, PA.
He is convinced the incidents are not isolated, and he's
going to be the next victim. Peter goes to Woodbyrne to
uncover the story behind the castrations so he can stop
the next one before it happens. As Peter's detective work
progresses, the history behind the two castrations reveal
themselves, leading him to how the third must inevitably
unfold unless he can stop it. At its heart, 'Fresh
Air' investigates the funny and tragic state of contemporary
American sexuality, examines how we got here, and searches
for a way out.

VIDEO INSTALLATION University Gallery
The University Gallery is in the Fine Arts Center at UMass and has a
permanent collection of late 20 Century and contemporary
art.
opening reception 3/28, 6-8
pm
This exhibition celebrates the sensual basis of color,
its subjectivity, and its natural capacity
to convey feeling and evoke emotion. It focuses on the
ability of color to overcome the categorical distinctions
of form/content and figure/ground and reach beyond
the constructs of thought directly to the senses and the
emotions.
Color extends beyond the objects before the viewer and
moves directly to the viewer's subjective responses.
Belgian artist Ann Veronica Janssens creates "propositions"
or "interventions"
that explore the relationship between time and
space.
Los Angeles artist, Diana Thater's video installations
focus on the relationship among animals, human beings, and
technology. Her site-specific video projections use
a palette of red, green, and blue, the basic chromatic elements
of video projection technology.
During the opening reception a gallery talk between artist
Ann Veronica Janssens and curator Gregory Salzman will shed
additional light on the exhibition.
Free and open to the public; free parking after 5 pm!

"SPEAKING TO THE

3/24/07 - 4/28/07
Artist reception 3/29
5-8PM
Gaddier Rosario's Artist Statement: Art is finding myself
and refinding myself in each painting. An inevitable self-portrait
in time and space. I search and I search for myself amongst
the threads of forms and colors, telling my ideas and ideals
in the painting. An invitation to a mute world: where you
may converse with the self that inhabits each one of us.
My art is autonomous but not puristic, it is polluted
through life, rendered sensible to the figures and symbols
of the era and the signs of time: the raw matter that is
transfigured by art as an offering beyond its immediacy.
Always searching to freely capture the sensibility that
sur rounds me and, as its consequence, express my own truth.

"Spring Break" Opening
April 1, 2007
from 1 - 3 PM
____________________________________________________________________________________
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE ART GALLERY BLOOMS
WITH WORKS OF GREG SMITH
The Western New England
College Arts Enrichment Committee will host "Spring Break",
an art exhibit by painter Greg Smith from Sunday, April
1 through Thursday, April 26 at the Western New England
College Art Gallery in the Campus Center on the College's
main campus.
An opening reception will
take place on April 1 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
General Art Gallery hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
on Monday through Saturday, and 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
on Sunday. The event is free and open to the public.
A resident of Northampton, Smith s works have been exhibited in
numerous galleries in Massachusetts, Ohio, Florida, and California. Inspired by
his love of gardening, Smith has created a series of paintings depicting
flowers, including several varieties of orchids, roses, and tulips. The
paintings, often one hundred times life-size, give a butterfly s view of flower,
bud, and leaf structure, paying special attention to light and color.
Smith and his wife of 30 years, artist and sculptor Aurora, recently
had a joint exhibit at the New York Art Expo at the Jacob Javits Convention
Center. The showing led to a deal to market Smith s paintings throughout Asia.
Many of these works were displayed at China's prestigious Canton Fair. Smith has
also staged a special exhibit at The Canyon Ranch Spa and Resort in Lenox, and
has created many commissioned works for private individuals and corporations.

SWING CARAVAN GYPSY JAZZ TRIO SWING
_____________________________________________________________________________________
GYPSY JAZZ TRIO SWING Manhan

SWING CARAVAN
04/11/07 and 04/25/07
6-8 PM
Lead guitarist Matthew Ruby Shippee, rhythm guitarist Jack Brown, and
double bass player Daniel Pac form a solid improvising trio that is sometimes
augmented by guest violin, accordion, or clarinet. The group is known for
performing this hot jazz with the kind of spontaneous and sensitive playfulness
that spawned the style.
Since starting in Fall 2004, Swing Caravan has played steadily in the
Northampton area, including a showcase at the local Django in June festival,
First Night Northampton (two years in a row), the Valley Free Radio benefit
concert, Sundays at the Black Sheep Café (subbing for house band Gypsy
Wranglers), Pothole Pictures at Memorial Hall, and private functions. Since
October 2005 Swing Caravan has also been playing a regular (every other Friday)
gig at Mocha Mayas Café, the new hill-town music hotspot in Shelburne Falls.
Whether playing the fast and fiery tunes or evocative ballads, the
band displays a passion for sharing this uplifting music with audiences. The
band members share a great respect for the tradition of Gypsy Jazz, heard in how
they seek to adhere to most aspects of the genre-the classic gypsy rhythm, the
stabbing and melodic guitar lines, and a love of Django's classic repertoire.
But Swing Caravan isnt afraid to try new things with the music, like bringing
rock and world music aesthetics into the mix from time to time as they bring
Django's music to a modern audience. Have a listen, and send us your comments in
the box below!

Liz Smith Ceramics at the Artisan
Gallery Reception Friday, April 13, 5-8pm
____________________________________________________________________________________
THE ARTISAN GALLERY IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE OPENING OF AN EXHIBIT OF THE
BEAUTIFUL WHEEL THROWN AND HAND MADE CERAMICS OF LIZ SMITH.
Hours: 10-6 Mon-Sat; 10-9 Thurs; 10-5 Sun; Artwalk Friday 10-9
The Artisan Gallery
162 Main Street
Northampton, MA
413.586.1942
The Artisan Gallery is pleased to announce
the opening of an exhibit of the beautiful wheel thrown and hand made ceramics
of Liz Smith.
Liz, a resident of Little Rock, Arkansas, has been studying ceramics
and making pottery since 1991. She received her undergraduate degree from
Skidmore College and apprenticed for a year with highly respected ceramic artist
Toshiko Takaezu. Her Master of Fine Arts degree was awarded in 2000 by Louisiana
State University. Liz is now an assistant professor of Art at the University of
Central Arkansas.
Liz talks about her work:
"The most intriguing aspect of making functional work for me is that it is
an art form readily
accepted into people s lives. Mine is a commitment to the idea that art is
most effective when it is
connected to repeated daily experience revealing itself through use over
time. This commitment is one that consistently brings me back to the functional
object. Our contemporary context often finds us less and less connected in a
physical way to experience and to others. I am compelled to make work that
proposes an alternative to this path and highlights the continuing relevance of
the handcrafted object.
Functional pots both demand and create sensual experience. They are meant
not only to be seen
but touched, used and pondered, their weight felt, their surfaces pressed
against hands and lips.
Their function aids in nourishing the body; the physical act of their
creation links me to the
user, and their references and materials link us both to the long history
of art and ceramics. This complex mix of physicality, community and history
keeps me continually engaged in the process of making.
Currently I am most interested in 18th and 19th century European porcelain
from factories such as
Meissen and Sevres. It is the idea of the grandiose celebrations for which
these objects were made that I am so attracted to. The objects acted as decadent
and ostentatious displays of wealth but also as markers of the importance of
eating and drinking, of the meal enjoyed and shared with others. In my work I
embrace the idea of decoration, grandiosity, and ostentation while infusing
these elaborate objects with a casualness through material, process and surface
that may be more appropriate to our
everyday utilitarian activities. These objects are not meant to be passive
actors in the shared meal but rather defining characters. They are not meant to
be used only during celebratory occasions but rather to support the notion that
every occasion is celebratory. It is of the utmost importance to me that people
use these objects, as it is only through use that their purpose can be
fulfilled."

LIGHT / TREES ~
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREA LAWRENCE / JULIA MAX AT THE BLUE GUITAR
GALLERY Saturday, April 14, doors open at 5 but
the performance is at 7
186 D NORTHAMPTON ST. (RT 10), EASTHAMPTON.
Julia Max: "Various cultures around the world have
consistently honored trees as the source of life, order, knowledge, and healing;
they are often depicted as an portal into a spiritual realm. My work
portrays trees in a reverent and even allegorical style; these trees are a
physical connection to an ancient and divine energy. I have used a Hobo 8x10
camera to create most of the images on display. My use of a box camera
(literally a wooden box) with a fixed lens and shallow depth of field along with
Fuji color paper as a negative produces a ghostly, impressionistic quality with
subtle, yet rich, colors." Photographer Andrea Lawrence gives us a
menagerie of images manifesting from seeing the world directly without filters.
These photographs are taken in the Miksang - or 'Good Eye' in Tibetan -
tradition, developed by Michael Wood under the guidance of the Vidyadhara
Chogyam Trungpa. The photos reveal a commitment to pushing the shutter in a
moment of seeing which stops the mind. The images capture a freshness freed from
rules and mental constructs - leaving only the direct perceptions of a mind
unattached, clear, uncomplicated and joyous. At 7 pm Andrea will give a slide
presentation. Christie Svane will tell a story. Guitar music by Bill
O'Haire to follow. more info at http://www.theblueguitar.org

walking tour of arts and culture, has added a proposal page to its website where
visual, music and performance artists can outline what they would like to show
or perform if given the opportunity.
All the locations that participate
in Art Walk Easthampton can view the submissions for possible inclusion in an
upcoming event. The talent describes the work, provides images, identifies the
types of venues they would like to be in, the dates they are available and
provides contact information. If there's a match between the submission and the
venue's interest, the venue contacts the talent directly to handle booking
arrangements. The proposal form is available at www.ArtWalkEasthampton.org and is open to all local and
regional artists. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ONGOING An offer
from Joe Blumenthal of Downtown Sounds who generously would like to have artists
display their work there. (Downtown Sounds, 21 Pleasant St., Northampton, next
to the Pleasant St. Theater)
The window is quite large, and has three
panels, each one about 6' X 6', and is about 24" deep. It is exposed to intense
sunlight in the morning; the heat of the sun plus the narrowness of the window
make it inappropriate to display most musical instruments.
However, the
sunlight doesn't hurt most artwork since it's only exposed for a month to six
weeks. I normally pay $150 to the artist who installs the window, and work out a
consignment agreement for the store to take a percentage of the price if the art
is for sale and we manage to sell some of it.
The artwork can be
freestanding, lean against a wall at the back of the window that's about three
feet high, or (if it's not heavy) be hung from the ceiling. It's great when
the art can have a musical theme, but it's not necessary. Because of its highly
visible commercial location, the work should have a mainstream appeal and not
have themes which could be offensive. Small pieces don't work well since the
window is so large.
If one of your readers is interested in displaying
in this context, please have them contact me via email:
musician@downtownsounds.com, or via phone at 413- 586-0998. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
