FOOD AND WINE AND FABULOUS FOLKS A Potluck reception at the MFA.
 Tomorrow evening,
Tuesday, from 5-7 PM is my reception at the Springfield Museum of Fine
Arts and you are all specially invited, esteemed, revered, celebrated and
all that adjectival welcomeness. I usually put my own shows in the
newsletter chronologically among all the others but friends have complained that
they didn't know about my last few shows, inadvertantly skipping over them, and
so I have been ordered to post it here. I feel like this newsletter is not my
own personal promotion vehicle and so it is with much sheepishness that I use
this space to specially invite you all. Each of you will get your own VIP
area complete with velvet ropes to keep the overexuberant imaginary Mimes at
bay. When Mimes get carried away it can be quite disconcerting, depending on
your imagination. The imaginary Mimes will be passing hor d'oeuvres (flown in
from Paris) and splashing about in the imaginary champagne fountain which will
be filled with imaginary Cristal donated by my pretend friend P. Diddy to whom I
was first imaginarily introduced by my imaginary assistant DiddyMo. Imaginary gift bags will be
filled with Prada Sunglasses, Swarovsky Crystal-encrusted iphones (with the
first year of usage prepaid and which incidentally, make great weapons for
beating the thieving domestic help, a la Naomi Campbell), certificates for a 3
week cruise of the Greek Islands, a home karaoke machine, a years' supply of
vintage turtle wax and a signed paperback copy of, "Misty of Chincoteague" by Marguerite
Henry, the heartwarming tale of a pony named Misty who lived on an island in
Virginia or Maryland or somewhere. But in reality it is a potluckish sort of thing and the food and wine
and sparkling water will be whatever people will bring. So it's a bring something to share kinda thing. All
contributions will be greatly appreciated as the reception is entirely my fiscal
responsibility and I am drained by the costs of this show as well as those those
associated with producing this newsletter. SPECIAL THANKS AND LEAPS OF JOY:My dear
pal, Maureen Scanlon, has generously donated 2
cases of white wine (no red wine or beer is allowed at the museum) and loveable
photographer-at-large, Robert Tobey has also offered to bring a
few bottles of white as has Susan Bergeron-West and so we have the basis of a
fabulous reception. There will be many more thanks to be made in the next
newsletter as I cannot recall all the people who have offered to bring things,
the list is that long and I am that scattered. No thanks will go
ungiven. Another round of thanks is in order for Stone Soup Concrete for shipping the work
to the museum and Get Set Printing for making my postcards
happen for me. Isn't it amazing when local businesses owned and operated by
fellow local non-corporate entity kind of humans get out the help? I could not
have done this without them. My previous
stance was no food and last week I said not to come hungry, not wanting
to make it complicated for anyone, but so many people have offered that I am
reversing my stance. Any and all food will be greatly appreciated. I am touched
by the many offers of snacky delights. We will likely be thrown out
right at 7 so any non-disposable containers etc would have to be grabbed on the
way out. I am not planning an after party as it rumored to rain and is a
weeknight but maybe another time we can have a big newsletter party somewhere.
I'd love to find a way to hold a newsletter potluckish fundraiser to help with
the costs of the newsletter, maybe at the Frontier Drive-in with Saturday Night
fever playing!? If I could only pull such a thing off. Directions can be
found here. My version, which you may use at
your own risk (map here), is to take 91 south to exit 7. At
the light at the end of the ramp go left onto State Street, and pass between the
hotels. Go through the next light, across Main Street. After the parking garage
take a right onto Dwight Street. Go through another light, passing the civic
center on your right, and take a quickity quick curvy lefty thing onto Chestnut
Street. Cross over State Street and take a right onto Edwards Street. There is a
parking lot on your right on Edwards St. Street parking is also available. From
the parking lot you can enter the quadrangle and the MFA is to the right. Once
inside the door you will go up the stairs and to the left and follow the hall
past the Dutch and Flemish Galleries. I am in the Barn Gallery, next to the
French Impressionist Gallery. The tabel with beverages and such will be outside
the gallery in the hall. If you see stuffed wildebeests and chimpanzees you are
in the wrong museum. If you see art, you are there. See you
tomorrow? SPECIAL NOTE: See my blog post about the current show at the
Oxbow. |

Domestic Reflections: Smashed Glass Assemblage by Mo Ringey
Jul 3, 2007 through Oct
14, 2007 Barn Gallery, Second Floor Museum of Fine Arts A collection of vintage
household appliances covered with hundreds of colorful pieces of broken tempered
glass.
Mo Ringey began working in glass about 12 years ago when her car
window was smashed outside her Boston apartment, a fate common to many cars in
her neighborhood. "Every morning I stepped over a fresh pile of someone else's
window remnants, hardly giving it a thought," she explained. "Strangely, the
fact that I was the victim this time made my own personal pile of glass look
quite brilliant and hopeful." She saved the broken pieces and eventually made a
vase. The project so inspired her that she went on to develop a technique for
working with broken window shards.
Included in the exhibition are a
transformed wringer washing machine, two refrigerators, a toaster, a mailbox and
other ordinary domestic objects that evoke memories from her childhood. Mo
describes these vintage objects as "bookmarks to a past place and time. I see
the process of adding glass as 'psychic reupholstering' that turns a fridge into
a jewelry box, a washing machine into a cooler, repurposing them into quixotic
things."
A free and
public reception will be held Tuesday, July
24 from 5-7 PM. See the museum site (link
above) for directions. I lifted this
whole thing directly from the museum's website.
I too hate writing my own blurbs. |

Hoyt
Photographs by Bruce Barone and Victor Hoyt
07/12/07 - 08/31/07
Tuesdays--Saturdays
11:30--9:30 at The Apollo Grill at
Eastworks
This series of images is the creative work of two
photographers BRUCE BARONE and VICTOR HOYT; each with a unique approach to
their craft.
Bruce Barone's work is
contemplative. He seeks the common thread that runs through the seasons. It is
how a place changes, yet remains the same, that gives his work power. In this
series of images of The Lower Mill Pond, you will find this subtle thread in the
old posts, the distant mountains, and curve of the shoreline. You will also see
the hand of time as it paints new faces on the scene. This is the anchor
of the show; the theme that binds it together.
Victor Hoyt has a less thematic
style. He is interested in fleeting moments. The way the sun casts a shadow
across a railing, or a damsel fly pauses on a flower bud. Once seen, these
moments become memory, fading briefly to be replaced by another, and another.
The photographs provide a counterpoint to The Lower Mill Pond. They give the
viewer a window into some of the beautiful places that surround our little
community.

FRAGMENTED - ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA ARTWORK BY
JILL LEWIS
FRAGMENTED - ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA ARTWORK BY JILL LEWIS
07/14/2007 - 08/18/2007
Reception Aug. 2, 5-8
Jill Lewis is a recent graduate from Greenfield Community College and
Massachusetts College of Art & Design.
The work shown in this
exhibition, fragmented is a result of a process combining photography, light
sensitive emulsion and charcoal. Lewis' goal is to have present time dissolve
away as her viewers enter into other worlds, allowing them to complete what is
absent, and explore the disjointed imagery while creating their own visual
story.
This exhibition is made possible in part by a grant from the

Saturday, July 28th, at The Elevens in
Northampton
It's on. Saturday, July 28th, at The Elevens in Northampton. Starting around 10:00. $5.
The Lineup: 1. Evolve: Life in the Group --These guys are a great live
drums and bass duo (local too). Their sound is ambient, lush, and full of trippy
energy. Featuring one of the finest drummers in the area, Troy Larusso.
2. Beastwith2Backs --We're breaking out 2 new songs tonight. The
first is "Chinese Girl in Braids" --a super big beat ode to the inescapable
tastiness of Chinese girls. Key lyric: "Chinese
girls, they got the zest, sturdy Chinese girls they're pound for pound the best,
cute as a button with a tiny titty rack, that juicy little boonany I got to give
a smack!"
*The second new song is "Brigadier Baby", part 3 of the
Babies Marching Trilogy. It's a different kind of song for us...it's a scary and
venomous campfire story that you really hope doesn't come true. We've already
begun planning a video shoot for the song with the mad maestro from "Educate
Your Body", Mr. Chris Ohlson. Key lyric:
"He sits at the altar, the anvil, the vice; starts playing cards and eating
dice; he cheats, he lies, he won't play fair, dealing from the bottom of the
deck playing solitaire; he's making a weapon, a tool to slice, he's got hammers
scissors picks spikes; the fire is laughing, the bellows blasting, Brigadier
Baby is now finally happy."
*The beautifully uncompressed DVD
version of our new video for "God is an Alleycat Gambling Fiend" will be
available for sale or theft. The DVD will have the video as well as the audio
single and an instrumental remix (for those intimate moments).
3. Nude Black Glass --These guys are from central MA and come
highly recommended. Their sound is sort of Arctic Monkeys meets Incubus.

Start Date: 07/31/07

Time: 8:00 pm concert
Saxophonist and composer Sarah Manning has first-hand experience of the
institutionalized gender discrimination that exists in the commercial jazz
industry where the critics, talent buyers and even fans are predominantly
male. Tired of waiting for the industry to change from within, Manning is
introducing an ensemble designed to actively engage the public with these issues
and bring jazz to a new demographic.
From July 31 through August
3, Shatter the Glass, four young jazz musicians Manning, who is a
1998 Smith College graduate, along young New York City talents Art Hirahara,
piano, Thomson Kneeland, bass and Kyle Struve, drums, will offer free open
rehearsals along with a concert at the Northampton Center for the Arts.
Rehearsals will be July 31 through August 3, Tuesday, Wednesday and
Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. including a daily half-hour Q&A with the
artists from 12:30-1 p.m. The group will be tackling compositions by Manning,
who has earned high praise from well-known jazz critic Nat Hentoff and been
profiled in Down Beat Magazine.
The concert will be Friday, August 3, at 8 p.m. at the Center.
Tickets, $12 with $10 for seniors and students; call 413-584-7327 to

IMPORTANT
INFORMATION ABOUT THE NEW HEALTH INSURANCE
LAWS
A
MUST READ FOR EVERYONE WITHOUT INSURANCE
A letter from the executive director of the Artists
Foundation to the Noho Arts Councile, excerpted;
The AF is doing a series of artists town meetings across the state
and
would love to come to Northampton. We would love to work with your
organization on it. We had tried to do a meeting in June but
alas it didn't come
together.
Here is the link to the town meetings and the agenda we use:
I have reserved the Library community room for Monday August 27th,
but
it would be better if we can come out at an earlier date- as I am
very
concerned that artists will think they have to have health insurance from
the
health care law by July 1st - when in fact they need to have proof of it
by
December 31st 2007.
In the mean time if you could help us get the word out about our
website, www.healthcareforartists.org , that
would be great- it is the only tool out there for artists to navigate the
new health care reform law (also non artists can use it too)

INDIE/DIY CRAFTERS AND ARTISTS
call for indie crafters
Start Date: now
End Date: ongoing
Time: 24/7
Dandie in the Underworld is opening very
soon and we need you.
We're a small boutique and art space hidden in an alley of downtown
Northampton, MA selling crafty- type goods from local artists (western mass
peeps). The boutique is entirely decorated with recycled goods, things we found
and have given new life. We're giving back to the community by providing an
outlet for all of the local underground crafters and we hope you want to be a
part of it.
Art meets function here. Everything is unique, no two pieces are the same.
But we re not a gallery. We're not looking for fine-art, it s all about those
funky/cutesy things you make. Anything from hand-knit scarves, bags, wallets,
jewelry, cards, clothes, pins....whatever you do, we want. It doesn't have to be
traditional, and the less traditional the better. Nothing is too out there for
us. This is the opportunity for all of you with that knack for creating stuff to
have it showcased in our boutique.
If you're as excited as we are and want
some more info or have stuff you want to sell please email marisa at

Waterbased Monoprinting
This workshop is an opportunity to explore the painterly printmaking
processes of Monotype. It brings together three artists each with a novel
approach to monprinting as faculty. Liz Chalfin will introduce
additive methods, stenciling and layering on the first day. Anita
Hunt will bring viscosity printing into the mix the following day and Joyce
Silverstone will teach transfer drawing and alternative plates on the
third. Each artist will demonstrate in the morning leaving students
the afternoon to try their hand at all the techniques. The last two
days will be work days where participants can delve into their own work and
develop rich and layered prints. Water-based inks are capable of producing a
watercolor-like quality that spans the full range of transparency as well as
permiting the artist to develop opacity through layering and thickness of
application. No previous printmaking experience necessary. $550 +
materials. To register visit our website www.zeamaysprintmaking.com or call

SUBMIT ONLINE FOR ART WALK EASTHAMPTON Art Walk
Easthampton, a monthly, self-guided walking tour of arts and culture, has added
a proposal page to its website where visual, music and performance artists can
outline what they would like to show or perform if given the opportunity.
All the locations that participate in Art Walk Easthampton can view the
submissions for possible inclusion in an upcoming event. The talent describes
the work, provides images, identifies the types of venues they would like to be
in, the dates they are available and provides contact information. If there's a
match between the submission and the venue's interest, the venue contacts the
talent directly to handle booking arrangements. The proposal form is
available at www.ArtWalkEasthampton.org and is open to all local and
regional artists. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ONGOING An offer from Joe Blumenthal of Downtown Sounds who
generously would like to have artists display their work there. (Downtown
Sounds, 21 Pleasant St., Northampton, next to the Pleasant St. Theater)
The window is quite large, and has three panels, each one about 6' X 6',
and is about 24" deep. It is exposed to intense sunlight in the morning; the
heat of the sun plus the narrowness of the window make it inappropriate to
display most musical instruments.
However, the sunlight doesn't hurt
most artwork since it's only exposed for a month to six weeks. I normally pay
$150 to the artist who installs the window, and work out a consignment agreement
for the store to take a percentage of the price if the art is for sale and we
manage to sell some of it.
The artwork can be freestanding, lean against
a wall at the back of the window that's about three feet high, or (if it's not
heavy) be hung from the ceiling. It's great when the art can have a musical
theme, but it's not necessary. Because of its highly visible commercial
location, the work should have a mainstream appeal and not have themes which
could be offensive. Small pieces don't work well since the window is so large.
If one of your readers is interested in displaying in this context,
please have them contact me via email: musician@downtownsounds.com, or via phone
at 413- 586-0998.

FREE CREDIT COUNSELING FOR LOCAL
ENTREPRENEURS
Valley CDC Expands Business Services to Include Credit
Counseling Northampton, MA,
March 23, 2007: Valley Community
Development Corporation (Valley CDC), a community-based non-profit organization,
is now offering personal credit counseling. This free one-on-one counseling is
available to people who want to open a small business in Valley CDC's service
area - Easthampton, Northampton, Hadley & Amherst. Current small business
owners with 20 or fewer employees are also eligible. There are no income
restrictions. This free credit counseling is available through June of 2007 via
a grant from the Massachusetts Office of Business and Technology.
According to David Plaut, Small Business Credit Counselor for Valley CDC,
"We know that credit scores play a very significant role when applying for a
business loan. We want our clients to secure financing, so we set them up for
success. Credit reports and credit scoring can be confusing. We can decipher
that information and help people boost their scores."
Valley CDC has been helping entrepreneurs start new enterprises and
expand existing small businesses for more than 18 years. Since 2003, Valley CDC
has counseled more than 250 individuals and businesses, and helped them acquire
more than $470,000 in funding from conventional banks and community loan funds.
Valley CDC's clients include companies in many diverse businesses, including
restaurants, manufacturers, beauty salons, spas, artists and artisans, clothing
designers, and retailers.
According to Joanne Campbell, Executive Director of Valley CDC, "We are
very excited to be able to expand our small business technical services to
include credit counseling. Our current grant will fund this service until June
30, 2007, so we hope that local entrepreneurs act on this opportunity quickly.
We are also hopeful that the legislature will recognize the economic benefits
that all Massachusetts communities gain from their investment in local
entrepreneurs and small businesses, and continue to fund the program beyond that
date."
For more information about credit counseling, please contact David Plaut,
Small Business Credit Counselor at 413-586-5855 x16 or dp@valleycdc.com.
