I just totally
deleted everything I had written here.
Next week, with Kelsey Flynn's help, there
will be many words here. Till then:
Tim de Christopher's show at the Oxbow
will be up until August 3. I posted about
it here.
He is keeping the gallery open
7 days a week for this show, from 12 to
5, until Aug. 3rd. On Fridays the gallery
is open until 8pm. I call this a must-see.
It is naked and brave and honest and compelling.
It is like a novella. It has the added
allure of Hilda Allhach's sculptures in
the side gallery which also merit a look-see.

Domestic Reflections: Smashed Glass
Assemblage by Mo Ringey
Jul
3, 2007 through Oct 14, 2007
Barn Gallery, Second Floor
Museum of Fine Arts
A collection of vintage household appliances
covered with hundreds of colorful pieces
of broken tempered glass.
Mo Ringey began working in glass about 12
years ago when her car window was smashed
outside her Boston apartment, a fate common
to many cars in her neighborhood. "Every
morning I stepped over a fresh pile of someone
else's window remnants, hardly giving it
a thought," she explained. "Strangely, the
fact that I was the victim this time made
my own personal pile of glass look quite
brilliant and hopeful." She saved the broken
pieces and eventually made a vase. The project
so inspired her that she went on to develop
a technique for working with broken window
shards.
Included in the exhibition are a transformed
wringer washing machine, two refrigerators,
a toaster, a mailbox and other ordinary
domestic objects that evoke memories from
her childhood. Mo describes these vintage
objects as "bookmarks to a past place and
time. I see the process of adding glass
as 'psychic reupholstering' that turns a
fridge into a jewelry box, a washing machine
into a cooler, repurposing them into quixotic
things."

Photographs
by Bruce Barone and Victor Hoyt
07/12/07
- 08/31/07
Tuesdays--Saturdays
11:30--9:30
at The
Apollo Grill at Eastworks
This series of images is the creative
work of two photographers BRUCE
BARONE and VICTOR HOYT; each with a unique approach to their
craft.
Bruce
Barone's work is contemplative.
He seeks the common thread that runs
through the seasons. It is how a place
changes, yet remains the same, that
gives his work power. In this series
of images of The Lower Mill Pond, you
will find this subtle thread in the
old posts, the distant mountains, and
curve of the shoreline. You will also
see the hand of time as it paints new
faces on the scene. This is the
anchor of the show; the theme that binds
it together.
Victor
Hoyt has a less thematic style.
He is interested in fleeting moments.
The way the sun casts a shadow across
a railing, or a damsel fly pauses on
a flower bud. Once seen, these moments
become memory, fading briefly to be
replaced by another, and another. The
photographs provide a counterpoint to
The Lower Mill Pond. They give the viewer
a window into some of the beautiful
places that surround our little community.

FRAGMENTED - ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA ARTWORK BY
JILL LEWIS
FRAGMENTED - ORIGINAL MIXED
MEDIA ARTWORK BY JILL LEWIS
07/14/2007 - 08/18/2007
Reception Aug. 2, 5-8
Jill Lewis is a recent graduate
from Greenfield Community College and
Massachusetts College of Art & Design.
The work shown in this exhibition, fragmented
is a result of a process combining photography,
light sensitive emulsion and charcoal.
Lewis' goal is to have present time
dissolve away as her viewers enter into
other worlds, allowing them to complete
what is absent, and explore the disjointed
imagery while creating their own visual
story.
This exhibition is made possible in
part by a grant from the Massachusetts
Cultural Council

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
"I have always tried to capture
the force of nature in my work. When you
watch a plant grow you can see its intention
is perfect. It uses just the right shape,
amount of color, and texture to do what
it has to do. I try to emulate this ³philosophy²
in clay, without doing realistic imitations
of plants, but drawing upon essences and
distilling aspects or parts to create
a perfect synthesis of form and color.
My work is very tactile as a consequence;
on one level it satisfies the human desire
to touch and feel something attractively
natural, but on a deeper level, it rewards
the user by connecting them with a very
potent and tightly focused distillation
of nature. It is this the aesthetic connection
that adds extra life and energy and meaning
to the act of using, or simply contemplating,
the piece that is the goal and purpose
of my work."
The Artisan Gallery is located at 162
Main Street, Downtown Northampton. For
