| LET ME CALL
YOU SWEETHEART?
Dear Sweetheart, a.k.a,
mo, Lately the
world seems tainted with an unhealthy emotional hue. Something crazy has gone
retrograde it seems. I have heard from millions of people that everyone they
know, selves included, have been struggling with the daily emonuclear fallout
and it is grinding them down. Me too. But today Liberace spoke to me from an
album cover on a table in a hallway, in this world and said, "Let me call you
sweetheart" and it hit me. Maybe if we all call each other sweetheart we can
break through the nozone layer of gloom. Why me? Why Liberace?
Well,
today I had some lovely and well-behaved studio visitors, Frank, Gregory and
Tamsen, and as I was showing them around the building we came upon a stack of
albums for sale for a dollar on the 2nd floor. I had last picked up that so
special Herb Alpert whipped cream album in this spot but on this trip I saw
Liberace! My lovely, well-behaved visitors led me to the album as I never go
upstairs otherwise. So I grabbed it and put my dollar in the coffe can. It
wasn't quite like when I discovered Benign
Girl but I did immediately feel Liberace tugging at my sleeve with an
important message and there it was, the name of the album.
My second
thought was that Liberace would be the perfect companion for Benign Girl, in a
twisted way. He could be her fabulous gay shopping buddy. They could go to the
mall and get makeovers and he could advise her on her dressage, "Think more
flash and less tramp, honey, Maybe try a different expression or untilt your
head", and the void in her personality would run over with his overabundance
of self. It was so perfect that it called to mind my favorite spam email subject
line this week, "Surplus Predestination". (Although, "Stop
Puglifying" was rather brilliant and is also apropos here).
Obsessing
over such things seems so much more sane than the current state of the world. It
makes me want to call everyone, "Sweetheart". I guess I can if I want. What if
everyone called everyone they met today, "Sweetheart". Could we change the mood?
Change the world? I am going to try. it.
IT GETS
BETTER I have
started a circle of imaginary supersweetheartpals.
Then I went
looking for my new album cover art online and I found "The
100 worst album covers ever".
So I chose a few friends for
Liberace and Benin Girl. Now there's Fabio, Tammy Faye Baker (channelling
Lara from Dr. Zhivago), Paddy Roberts (he looks like hilarity ensuing ad
infinitum) and the sour cream copycat ladies! (So I have come full circle to my
Herb Alpert Whipped Cream album cover).
They could all live together in
the Barbie Townhouse (unless there's a Benign Girl Townhouse) and be a big happy
reality show.
And I must
disclose that I am actually quite familiar with the specifics of the Liberace
wardrobe. He was blinged out long before Mr T. (who
announced this week after seeing the devastation of Katrina that he will no
longer wear bling) to a staggering degree.
On a trip
years ago to Las Vegas with my grandmother I was dragged to the Liberace Museum.
It looks kinda like a one story funeral home/chapel-like thing in a strip
mall on a big road of other strip malls. Parking is free.
After an hour
of silently (Lips latched tightly) looking over the displays with their placards
like, "this cape has 72,000 rubies, 58 million swarovski crystals, 75 gazillion
emeralds etc and weighed 58 pounds and is lined with mink and matches this mink
lined car that he drove on stage for this show which also matches the candelabra
which is made of diamonds and melted down ditzy heiresses and so on" my
grandmother suddenly shrieked (she was very hard of hearing), "I DON'T CARE WHAT
YOU SAY. HE WAS NOT GAY", causing all the other little old lady fans to
glare at me as though I had actually blasphemed the man in his holy
place.
Later she did admit to finding the outfits a bit, "swishy". He was
a real
sweetheart.

CULTURAL
FACILITIES FUND BECOMES LAW!
Senate Votes 33-3 to Override
Governor's Veto!
The Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund is now law.
The Senate voted 33-3 to join the House in overriding Governor Romney’s
veto of $13 million for the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund. The Campaign
for Cultural Facilities thanks Senate President Robert Travaglini, Chairwoman
Therese Murray, Chairman Jack Hart and Senator Stan Rosenberg for delivering a
resounding message of support for cultural tourism and for the arts, sciences
and humanities in Massachusetts.
This is a huge victory for the cultural
community— not only to override the veto in both chambers but to achieve clear
bipartisan support.
The work on the program guidelines will begin
immediately and we will keep you informed on how and when applications will be
accepted.
Thanks to all who advocated on behalf of the most significant
cultural facilities funding program in the nation.

WINDOWS
PROJECT IN EASTHAMPTON Open to all.
really.
From
Twyla Reardon-
Hello Sweethearts (I added that), I hope everyone
is having a fun and wonderful summer. On behalf of the
EasthamptonCulturalCouncil and WorkingPromisingArtists (WPA) I
would like to officially invite you to participate in this year's
WindowsProject. The dates for the show and special events are September15
thru October 3. You will find more details in the Artists' Submission
Package, just contact us at windowsproject@gmail.com and we will send it
forward.
The submission deadline has been extended to August 11,
2006. We intend to have parties, artists talks, visiting artists, and a
smattering of any other special events you can think of.
Please forward
this anouncement to artists you feel would be interested in participating in
this years WindowsProject.
Artists' Prospectus Easthampton
WindowsProject 2006 "Celebrating This Old Mill Town As An Art City "
Easthampton, Massachusetts~nestled at the base of majestic Mt Tom~ is one of
those former mill towns valued by a wide variety of artists. For the 4th year we
are setting the stage for a community expression of creativity. We welcome your
art – all art.
WorkingPromisingArtists in collaboration with the
EasthamptonCulturalCouncil seeks proposals from creative individuals and groups.
Over the last three years WindowsProject has celebrated the creative spirit with
works which have included paintings, sculptures, photography, drawings, and fine
crafts from local artists. This year we are welcoming anyone/groups working in
visual arts (traditional & experimental), sound, installation, new media and
interactive arts for WindowsProject2006.
We are seeking work for
storefront windows, appropriate private/public interiors, building roof tops,
and outdoor spaces. WPA also seeks artists who are interested in giving artists
"talks ", offering "makeshops ", and engaging in art interactions &
interventions with the Public-At-Large.
This collaborative event will
bring local and visiting artists together in an installation that encompasses
all of downtown Easthampton. In addition to the abundant array of work seen
during past events WPA is interested in expanding our event. We plan to do this
by exploring the varied elements & emotional atmosphere that creates
Easthampton: a community building an exciting urban experience while preserving
our rural past.
We are encouraging proposals that incorporate elements
of what is often referred to as "Psychogeography ". Here's an explanation taken
from Wikipedia, an open source online encyclopedia:
In 2004 Joseph Hart
wrote that "psychogeography " is "a slightly stuffy term that's been applied to
a whole toy box full of playful, inventive strategies for exploring cities.
Psychogeography includes just about anything that takes pedestrians off their
predictable paths and jolts them into a new awareness of the urban landscape."
We have many engaging ideas and a willingness to assist visiting
artists. We are arranging guest accommodations & beautiful hospitality
within our artist's community for artists from outside of the Pioneer Valley.
If you would like to participate in the project, please
contact:windowsproject@gmail.com
In regards to visiting artists
we are looking for local folks who are willing to open up their homes or studios
to guest artists participating in our big art party! Please, just contact us at
windowsproject@gmail.com to let us know you can house visitors or certainly if
you have any questions. Cheers and we look forward to hearing from
you, Twyla

ONGOING A
nice offer from Joe Blumenthal of Downtown Sounds who generously would
like to have artists display their work there. (Downtown Sounds, 21 Pleasant
St., Northampton, next to the Pleasant St. Theater)
The window is quite
large, and has three panels, each one about 6' X 6', and is about 24" deep. It
is exposed to intense sunlight in the morning; the heat of the sun plus the
narrowness of the window make it inappropriate to display most musical
instruments.
However, the sunlight doesn't hurt most artwork since it's
only exposed for a month to six weeks. I normally pay $150 to the artist who
installs the window, and work out a consignment agreement for the store to take
a percentage of the price if the art is for sale and we manage to sell some of
it.
The artwork can be freestanding, lean against a wall at the back of
the window that's about three feet high, or (if it's not heavy) be hung from the
ceiling. It's great when the art can have a musical theme, but it's not
necessary. Because of its highly visible commercial location, the work should
have a mainstream appeal and not have themes which could be offensive. Small
pieces don't work well since the window is so large.
If one of your
readers is interested in displaying in this context, please have them contact me
via email: musician@downtownsounds.com, or via phone at 413-
586-0998. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
