Entries for Building Materials Resource Center Artist
Competition
The Building Materials Resource Center is seeking all
who have a passion for reuse and art. Create durable,
functional pieces, such as chairs, coat/hat racks, framed
mirrors, dog houses, light fixtures, cabinets, bookshelves,
wardrobes and tables, made primarily from used building
materials.
The top three entrants will have the opportunity to
create a window installation in Boston Art Windows and
to display and sell their art in the Mission Hill Festival
of Fire on September 30.

The Gallery at Zea Mays Printmaking is pleased to host
two new exhibits:
Folklore Arena - Prints by Aaron Piziali and
Solar Plate Prints; An Invitational Portfolio,
which includes prints by nine members of Zea Mays Printmaking
studio: Meredith Broberg, Liz Chalfin, Stephanie
Cramer, Tracy Ducasse, Anita S. Hunt, Kate Jenkins,
Aaron Piziali, Judith Wolf, and Diane Worth.
The gallery is located at 221 Pine Street, on the third
floor of the Arts and Industry Building in Florence,
MA.
In Folklore
Arena, Aaron Piziali exhibits prints that use several
techniques - silkscreen, letterpress, linoleum cut and
drypoint - to present images and ideas about our relationships
with identity, the brain and learning disabilities.

From these
prints, a folklore of ability and history emerges. Piziali
states: “This is a personal attempt to map the mental
environment created by the simple acts of thought, those
that are successful and those that not.”
Exhibit hours are: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday:
12 - 5, Wednesday: 12 - 8, the first and third Saturdays
and Sundays of the month: 12 - 5, and by appointment.

Calling all miscreant mailers, drunk walking tour guides,
peripatetic monster truckers, wayward window displayers, hand-me-down
postcard makers, failed theme park conceivers, bad news bumper
sticker makers, and all ye who just have their doubts about
the tourist economy...
Cultural tourism has been heralded as the saving grace of
post-manufacturing towns, but what exactly are people touring?
What is worth seeing and what isn't? Why would one travel
three hours to feast ones eyes? What role do artists have
in these efforts and what roles are boring? 'What,' asks the
DeTourism Center, 'is interesting about touring?' And maybe
even more importantly, who wins, who loses, who is worth looking
at and who isn't? And how do we redirect attentions? The DeTourism
Center is unorthodox in that it isn't interested in booming
economies or pragmatic functionality. It won't get you from
here to there and it won't necessarily find you the best vacation
package. From field guides for divining water to alternative
maps for finding love in North Adams, the DeTourism Center
is almost mystical in its anti-intuitive, pro-meander methodologies.

Taber Gallery to exhibit
Burn Unit: works by Jeff DeRose and Mike Martindell
HOLYOKE
– The public is invited to view Burn Unit:
an exhibition of mixed media digital photography
and welded steel sculptures by Jeff DeRose and Mike
Martindell, February 27 to March 30 in the Taber
Gallery of Holyoke Community College.
This exhibition is free and open to all. DeRose
and Martindell will SPEAK during an opening reception,
March 8, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The
Taber Gallery is located on the second floor of the
Donahue Building, next to the HCC library and is open
Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
A former biomedical engineer, DeRose's
mixed media photography reflects his long held a fascination
with fire and its use as an agent of transformation
and purification. Martindell's haunting
steel sculptures have been shown in various venues
around the valley since he graduated from the University
of Massachusetts with a journalism degree in 1995.
In addition to his work as an art preparator for the
University of Hartford's Joseloff Gallery, Martindell
creates custom artwork for private homes and commercial
businesses. Both artists use fire or heat, though
disparately, in their work. |

Northampton continues its Arts Night Out program Friday,
March 10, from 5 to 8 p.m., offering open galleries
at 20 locations, all within a short walk in the city's
downtown area.
Highlighted in March are several galleries:
~~The first, The Old Courthouse Gallery, 99 Main
Street, a new addition to the gallery roster,
offers original provocative and often comic statements
of collage artist and Chesterfield resident Michael
Metzger;
~~At Alfredo's Gallery, 6 Crafts Avenue, the
exhibit is entitled "In Praise of Clouds," works by
Howard Karger, considered one of the finest landscape
photographers in New England. Also showing will be
works of Elsa Vitols;
~~Skera, 221 Main Street, will feature the
highly decorated ceramic trays, vases and bowl by
Mary Vaughn Blake of South Hadley;
~~A.P.E. Gallery, Thorne's Market, third floor,
offers two exhibitions—"The Mountain and the Garden:
The Contemplative Practice of Visual Arts," with works
by John Berry, Carrie Bergman, Rene Theberge, Rose
Sackey- Milligan, Lisa Berry and Lila Palivoda; and
"People and Places: Recent Paintings of People and
their Surroundings," by Heidi DiEntremont; |
~~Oxbow Gallery, 275 Pleasant Street, will
have still lifes as well as landscapes painted in
recent years in Vermont and Italy by Martha Armstrong,
who has taught at Smith and Mount Holyoke colleges
as well as institutions further afield, and lives
in Hatfield;
~~Michelson's Gallery, 132 Main Street, offers
"Nature is Majesty," paintings by Thomas Locker, who
has spent his life in service to two great passions—painting
and nature. His profound love and respect for the
natural world is reflected in both his paintings and
book illustrations; this award-winning artist will
give a lecture at 7 p.m. at the gallery, as part of
Arts Night Out;

Girl Betsy-Dawn Williams, set to Blast Off
Recently signed to the roots music label El Toro Records
in Barcelona, Spain and armed with her new CD release,
“Rocket Girl”, Betsy-Dawn Williams is letting the cat
out of the bag at The Elevens in Northampton, on Friday March
17.
Williams, who’s musical meanderings are embedded in roots
music, and known for playing in the honkytonk band Girl Howdy,
and the zydeco-influenced R&B band Slippery Sneakers,
will be showing her rockin’ side with this new project, “Li’l
BeeDee & the Big Melodee Combo”.
Joining her will be Jeff Potter on piano, who once
teamed up with BeeDee in a former roots rock band project,
is back on the track getting the rock & roll train going
again.
Also on hand will be Graham Tichy (son of Commander
Cody guitarman John Tichy) on lead guitar, who is well known
in the Albany area as the premier rockabilly guitar cat, along
with Jimmy Haggerty on string bass and Clark Howell on
drums.
Potter, Tichy & Haggerty comprised the core of musicians
on her CD “Rocket Girl”. These guys are the kind of players
who really showcase the rockabilly sound that keeps the “roll”
in rock & roll.

& The Big Melodee Combo hit the stage at 7pm, Friday

HOLDS ANNUAL MUSICAL FEAST Celebrating the Music and
Cuisine of Ireland On Sunday March 19, 2006 at 5:30
pm, the Northampton Community Music Center will have
its third annual "Musical Feast." |
Each year,
the event celebrates the music and cuisine of one region.
This year, the Musical Feast will showcase Ireland,
with music by two prominent local Irish bands, Shay's
Rebellion and Selkie, and contemporary
Irish cuisine prepared by Irish-born Chef Michael Corduff.
The event will take place at the Delaney House,
and the evening will consist of an elegant four-course
dinner, musical performances, and a silent auction.
The dinner
menu will feature such items as "Dublin Cheddar
and Chive Soup," "Roasted Leg of Lamb with Mint Demi-Glace,"
and "Bailey's Chocolate Ganache Cake." The Silent
Auction will feature, among other things, a Yamaha
P22 45" Upright Professional Collection piano; a week's
vacation at an inn in Vermont; a private aerial sight-seeing
tour, and a framed, signed, limited edition lithograph
by Eric Carle.
Now in its 20th year, the Northampton Community Music
Center is a not- for-profit organization whose mission
is "to foster the love and pursuit of music within the
community through quality musical education, performances,
and activities that are accessible to all." NCMC's talented
faculty offer a diverse range of musical programs to
more than 700 participants a year—both adullts and children—and
bring concerts and other musical evvents to hundreds
more in our surrounding communities, uniting people
of all ages and backgrounds through the shared experience
of music. NCMC is the only music program in Hampshire
County that offers financial aid: no qualifying student
has ever been denied scholarship.
The Musical Feast has been generously underwritten by

being issued for a public art ideas competition in Dorchester
and Roxbury.
In Dorchester, Dorchester Arts Collaborative and St.
Mark’s Area Main Streets received a planning grant for
public art in Peabody Square.
The Roxbury Center for the Arts received a grant to
create a work of public art to celebrate the new center

Beginning in 2003, GALLERY twenty-four has organised this
annual exhibition concentrating on exposing assemblage art
to the international art market of Berlin, Germany. With its

Annually over 50 artists from a myriad of countries exhibit
their works for a four week period in the Berlin facilities
of the gallery. Subsequently, pieces chosen for first, second
and third place prizes, as well as those receiving honorable
mention awards will be exhibited in the Paris gallery. Additionally,
artists compete for the award of best in show and cash and
prizes valued at over EU10,000. making this one of the most

The winning artist receives publicity and media recognition,
a pane of Duck Stamps signed by the Secretary of the
Interior, select travel to ceremonies, guest speaker
