A DAY
LATE AND A DOLLOP SHORT
 |
|
mo, Due to internet
problems yesterday (no bandwidth, no newsletter) and
last night, this newsletter is a day late and perhaps
a dollop short. So this is full of unfinished stuff
and likely full of mistakes. But then this morning
a bunch of new stuff came in so it was a fortuitous
delay. Fate?
Yet, because I feel responsible for the late arrival,
I feel compelled to give you a very precious thing;
Nirvana's, "Smells like team spirit" as performed
by the Ukelele
Orchestra Of Great Britain. This is a truly special
piece of work. If I can figure out how to make it
into an MP3 I'll play it on the radio show next Wednesday.
Happy Memorial Day. Safety in grilling at all times.
For all you
Geminis , happy birthday! Here's Your Rob
Brezny ...
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): "Do you want to sell
sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want
to change the world?" That's the question asked by
Marc Hedlund in the intro to his "Proverbs
for Entrepreneurs". Since you're experiencing
new opportunities to bring more of the entrepreneurial
spirit into your life and work, I hought I'd offer
you a few of his suggestions. (1) Pay attention to
any idea that won't leave you alone. (2) Give people
what they really need, not necessarily what they say
they need. (3) If you keep your brilliant ideas secret
for fear they'll be stolen, people will hide their
brilliant ideas from you. (4) Great things are made
by people who share a passion, not by partners who
have been talked into it.

DISPLAY
YOUR WORK AT DOWNTOWN SOUNDS
21
Pleasant St., Northampton, next to the Pleasant St.
Theater
A
nice offer from Joe Blumenthal of Downtown Sounds
who generously would like to have artists display their
work there. (Downtown Sounds, 21 Pleasant St., Northampton,
next to the Pleasant St. Theater)
The window is quite large, and has three panels, each
one about 6' X 6', and is about 24" deep. It is exposed
to intense sunlight in the morning; the heat of the
sun plus the narrowness of the window make it inappropriate
to display most musical instruments.
However, the sunlight doesn't hurt most artwork since
it's only exposed for a month to six weeks. I normally
pay $150 to the artist who installs the window, and
work out a consignment agreement for the store to take
a percentage of the price if the art is for sale and
we manage to sell some of it.
The artwork can be freestanding, lean against a wall
at the back of the window that's about three feet high,
or (if it's not heavy) be hung from the ceiling.
It's great when the art can have a musical theme, but
it's not necessary. Because of its highly visible commercial
location, the work should have a mainstream appeal and
not have themes which could be offensive. Small pieces
don't work well since the window is so large.
If one of your readers is interested in displaying in
this context, please have them contact me via email:
musician@downtownsounds.com, or via phone at 413- 586-0998.

all her fault. On the eve of her mother's major surgery, she
dreams that she is in a strange world with two opposing queens,
bizarre creatures, and masked inhabitants.
All is not well in this new world - the white queen has fallen
ill and can only be restored by the MirrorMask, and it's up

The Elements
Late Sunday night in my studio
with Billie Holiday's Body and Soul
drifting in from somewhere down the hall
and a steady rain streaming
down this wide face of windows,
I rise from brief sheets,
rumpled burgundy,
your head still imprinted
on the pillow,
my hands musky-sweet,
and write across a wall
with a stump of charcoal,
the no-light of a rainy night
slicking each pane of glass
wet, black licorice.
Memory burns like candles,
the weak light of your quick visit
flooding this series of drawings
of the primordial elements
earth, fire, air, water, space
pinned to the long walls
like moths
drawn too close
to flame.
I refuse shoes.
Underwear stuffed
in pockets,
charcoal is all I know,
the sooty love on my fingertips
blending black into a drawing,
the words "Body of Earth"
scribbled along its left side,
my finger probing like sex,
working the silky dust
into the soft skin of paper,
thinking
there is salvation in this
while God sits silent
in the air outside
my windows
looking in like rain,
like night.
